Bernado’s Circus narrates the story of a nine-year-old Polish Romani boy who witnesses the horrific extermination of his family and community by the SS during World War II.
After being caught stealing in a desperate attempt to survive, Bernado is sent to an orphanage characterized by deplorable conditions. He suffers multiple assaults by one of the priests, ultimately stabbing the priest in the eye to escape.
Following his escape, Bernado finds work clearing rubble from bombed buildings. During this time, he discovers stray dogs, which he trains to generate income outside of his labour. A ringmaster from a prominent circus observes one of his dog performances and invites Bernado to join the circus.
In this new environment, the seventeen year old Bernado quickly becomes popular among the circus's female performers, who take it upon themselves to educate him about life. Additionally, Bernado teaches two of his dogs to assist him in stealing purses and bags from unsuspecting individuals at night as the circus travels from town to town, accumulating a modest fortune in the process.
The novel contains explicit sexual scenes reminiscent of those found in Fifty Shades of Grey.
